Community colleges over the United States, the tuition is very cheap comparing to universities (both public and private).
The average (there may be some exceptions) for:
2 years college (public) = 2,000-3,000/years
4 years college (public) = 5,000-6000/years
4 years college (private) = 20,000-25,000/years
--------------------------------------
For international students, the tuition may be more expensive ( about doubled if attending in public college, NO different if enrolling in private college (same tuition as presidents)

The USAToday recently published a list of public university tuition. Public colleges and universities are generally less expensive than private colleges and universities. They also, generally speaking, have a two tiered system for tuition charges - permanent residents of the state pay less that those from other areas (referred to as non-residents). The non-resident tuition applies to international students.

Of the 75 "Flagship" universities on the list several had non-resident tuition charges in the $10,000-10,500 range (Univ. of Mississippi at Oxford, Mississippi State Univ., Starkville, Univ. of Alaska Anchorage, And University of Wyoming Laramie). One had non-resident tuition of less than $10,000 - that was Univ of South Dakota, Vermillion (they reduced tuition from the year before by more than $3,000).

State University of New York, Stony Brook had non-resident tuition of $11, 900.

The most expensive state university for non-residents was the Univ of Michigan Ann Arbor at $29,131 and The Univ of Vermont was $26, 308.

You can find complete results at http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2006-08-30-tuition-survey_x.htm

Remember that tuition is not the only cost. Room, board, books, health insurance etc.

Good Luck!

In general, southern and mid-western state universities (eg. Louisiana, Alabama, Oklahoma, Kansas, Kentucky, etc) may offer lower tuition costs. You may also find affordable universities in the east and west coasts, but because these geographic areas are more popular, there are many universities with higher tuition costs.
