My gf's TA needs new front and rear brakes. I would like to do them myself.

Can I use a C-Clamp to spread the calipers or do I need the special tool for this application?

Also, do I need anything special to pull the hubs and repack the wheel bearing or is it pretty straight forward and requiring only basic hand tools?

I'm an experienced mechanic, just not with this car. I like to ask before jumping into things.

Thanks in advance!

the wheel bearings are sealed units and cant be opened to lube them, the front calipers can be pushed back with c clamp, open the bleeder valve so you dont push all that old fluid into the master cylinder,if the rear calipers have the park brake cable attatched to them then you need a special tool to turn the piston back in,again bleeding the fluid off.replace pads and machine or replace rotors and then bleed the brakes afterwards
note: if you have abs ,pushing fluid back to master can damage the filters and valves in the abs control unit

I personally used a heavy duty c-clamp to push the pistons back into the calipers, so that should work out fine for you. I'm not sure if you would really need to even pull off the rotor and repack the bearings, since they are all sealed from the factory, and usually give little trouble. Chances are that this will take you a little while your first time, so make sure you have a saturday on your hands to kill. It's cool to figure out how to do this stuff on your own though, and saves big $$. Good luck.

I have a 2000 Pontiac Firebird. My husband took it in to the shop to get brake work done rather than do it himself because of needing special tools. I got all new pads and rotors turned on all 4 tires. It wasn't terribly expensive, it was around $300.00. This was about 2 months ago.

FYI - our mechanic had a problem with some sort of pin that was rusty breaking off. He said those cars were notorious for that happening. He said it's a nightmare when it happens.

if its rear disc you cant crank the pistons back in they probably screw in because of the e-breke.the fronts you can push back in just open the bleader so you dont back pressure the abs unit.
