I've always wondered the same thing. I think the answer lies in looking at the people who advocate this nonsense. There is nothing wrong with teaching abstinence. But, it needs to be taught right along with the more realistic avenue of teaching birth control and the ways to avoid STDs, especially HIV. Those people who want to teach abstinence only tend to be the same folks who confuse religion with reality. You can bet with confidence that these people are in the same group who are incensed because teachers can't lead students in prayer and think our whole country has gone the way of Godless heathens. Anyone who thinks that simply teaching their children abstinence will stop them all from following their natural human sex drive is living in La-La Land. Sure, some kids will remain virgins, and kudos to them. But many will not, and if they have not been educated about birth control and STDs they are in harm's way. It amazes me that people who feel this way are willing to take chances with their children's safety and futures. Some people just refuse to live in the real world.

Kids today need to be taught that abstinence is the best option. However, parents must take a realistic approach and give their children all education possible to make responsible choices. Kids need to be taught about STDs and pregnancy and how to protect themselves. Kids have made mistakes for generations - the risks are just higher now with HIV.
I am teaching my kids to abstain, but they will be educated about condoms in case they decide not to!

It worked for generations. Now people think that the whole idea is ridiculous. But past generations didn't get STD's, HIV, AID's, and there were few babies born out of wedlock or abortions. Abstinence solves many problems.

Americans and Muslims. Although the Muslims seem to be the only ones actually adhering to abstinence.

I think it is laughable that one should be forbidden to express their feelings to another person in the form of sex.

The only reason why people might listen to talks of abstinence is that they are afraid that no one will have sex with them and is looking for an excuse not to gamble their self-esteem, by claiming it is their own choice.

It's the ONLY birth control method - other than sterilization - that's 100% effective whenever it's used.

But getting people to use it is the problem . . .

Anyone with some common sense knows it would work.

If you do not have sex, you cannot get pregnant, and it's much less likely you'd get an STD.

Why libs have a problem with this, I'll never know. We can spend billions on keeping kids from drugs, but try to keep them from sex, and libs think you're crazy.
