I have been a computer tech for several years now. In my opinion this is how I would rank your choices.

Sony Vios; Overall a small machine that works well when not doing much. Can be very problematic when using it with any type of semi-involved programs like Microsoft Office or 3rd party softwares.

HP: It is a reliable computer. Does not tend to have too many hang ups. They tend to be a bit more expensive.

Toshiba is a very reliable computer. It tends to have the least amount of issues. The Satellite line is recommended. Thet too can be expensive but I think you can find better deals than you would at HP.

DO NOT get a Dell. They are as bad as a Sony. There is a reason they advertise 24 hour tech support... cuz you're gonna use it.

toshiba is greater effective than dell. I easily have a dell notebook now, this is a large device, yet my previous notebook is a toshiba. i'm out on the line now, I easily have the previous toshiba sitting at domicile, with a 4 365 days previous banging away on it. Toshibas are exceptionally lots indestructable. i've got not got any journey with Sony.

It all depends what you want out of your laptop. But a good machine, versatile, good balance price-perfomance and according to the latest consummer report:
1) Lenovo thinkpad (previously IBM) Great Deal
2) Dell Latitude
3) Dell Inspiron as low as $500 Very good for student and everyday computing
4) Toshiba ( I personnaly don't like toshiba or HP so you know my preferences...)

Good Luck!

Of the brands you mention, Sony VAIO is the top choice ... however, your budgeted price range is limiting for this make.

You can buy an excellent feature-laden Toshiba within your budget.

HP will give you the most bang for your buck but has gone steadily downhill since their merger with Compaq and I would avoid the brand like the plague.

I think that you first need to decide what you need the computer to do for you. I mean is it for school, working, gaming, media....the use is important, then you can find what's best for you.
