Unfortunately, for a shelter, it's cheaper to euthanize them, because then they don't have to pay for the cost to feed and house the animal, as they would after the animal was spayed or neutered. Sad but true.

Yeah everybody here is right the cost is cheaper to give the pink stuff and send them out the door in a body bag then to fix em' and feed em'. But if shelters were smart they could ask vets to voluenteer hours to spay/neuter public pets for a fraction of the cost. People don't spay/neuter cuz it is expensive adn vets make you pay up front, no payments. Well not evrybody has $300. to fork over, but they want a pet. So if shelters had a 1/2 off spay/neuter day once a month people could bring their pets in and get it done cheaper, or maybe a free day. Then more pets would get altered and less would show up at the pound. I wish I could do it with out going through all 4 years of vet school, just take a surgery course cause I would donate my time to help people and animals.

That is not why shelters euthanize so much - it is because they are always having new animals dumped in them & can only give so much time to each one already there to find a home. Unfortunately, this is a direct result of people OUTSIDE the shelter not spaying & neutering!

So, spaying & neutering costs more money - and more lives, as the unwanted pups & kittens get euthanized for lack of homes. I think it's worth spending the money, if people truly care about the plight of pets.

Euthanasia is a last resort at most shelters, it is used for an animal that is unadoptable for any reason(temperment, injury, etc.) This is why the shelters don't spay or neuter til the animal is adopted so that they can defer that cost in case the animal must be put down eventually. In a perfect world all the good animals would find a home and no animal would ever be abused, but we live in the real world and death is a part of it.

i think spay or neuter is cheaper. when my old dog Nina was spayed it was much cheaper than when we had to euthanize (due to cancer) for an animal shelter it may be cheaper in the long run. i personally think humans are irresponsible not to spay or neuter, this is the main cause of animals being in shelters

I don't think it's the cost of spaying or neutering them that is so much, it's the cost of feeding and caring for them for months at a time while waiting for a family to adopt them. That's why I think we should all support animal shelters and give the animals another chance.

Shelters have such a high number of unclaimed animals that they have to euthanize them or they could not afford to remain open. Cats get it first because there is such a high number of cats.

It is unfortunate and now that the Holiday season is here the numbers will rise again. People get pets for their children and when thew child does not care for the pet properly, the parent will get rid of it. The same thing happens at Easter.

I worked at a shelter for awhile and we did not euthinize animals due to price ususally they get euthed if they had been there more then three months and that is due to over population. If your shelter is euthing pets just cause of money then thats just not right.but to answer your question i think it is cheaper to to euthanize cause thats just a shot one time and to fix them requires a surgery i hope this helps

unfortunately it is cheaper to euthinize a pet because of the prices now of spay and neutering.. but thats only price wise i would rather pay the price of spay or neutering rather than putting an animal to sleep.. foxi

Unfortunately, euthansia. The shot is cheap, there's no recovery, and no attendant. Spaying and neutering requires surgery, recovery, antibiotics, etc etc etc.

Although it's a chicken and egg question. If we spayed and neutered our pets before a problem occurred, then the cost of euthanasia would be unnecessary!
