Absolutely. One of the lonliest moments of my life I was surrounded by about 10,000 people.

I was married, with a new child. I was in the Navy, just getting back from a 6 month tour to Europe. 3 months in, my wife left me taking my son with her. When our ship arrived back home, there were literally 10,000 people waiting for their loved ones. Holding banners and holding back tears of joy.

I walked down that pier alone. Not a soul there to welcome me home. Especially my wife and son. No banners, no tears, no hugs or kisses. That is one of the only times of my life I ever walked with my head down. I couldn't stand to see the anticipation and joy of those thousands without breaking down.

Lonliest moment of my life....

Yes. It is not uncommon to be alone in a crowd. If you don't fit in with the people you are surrounded by, then you will feel alone regardless of the number.

I don't. However, people do feel an emptiness when they are missing something in there life. Like when a loved one passes away, a divorce, a tough break up, or when a person is suffering from depression. Could be several causes, but I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
