I know he produced Tina Turner's solo 'Private Dancer' and wrote the title song. This is the story I heard: Tina, who was mega-famous with her husband Ike, only asked for her 'name' in the divorce proceedings. She didn't want any money. She didn't even want a house. Just her name. So during the 70s, she had to raise 6 kids on her own and even had to go on welfare for a while. Yes, a BIG star on welfare. She had her pride. She had her name. Meanwhile, in roughly 1980, Mark Knopfler sees Tina Turner waiting tables at a resturant and he's like "excuse me, but you're Tina Turner, why are you waiting tables?" She says "To feed my children".. He says "why are you not making a solo album then?" she says "I've been busy raising children". He gathers up a few well-known players and he gets Tina in the studio and they come up with the Private Dancer album and Tina becomes the HUGE solo artist she was always born to be! All thanks to Mark Knopfler! A true sultan of swing! :-)
