Work = energy = Force X distance = Newtons X meters = Pounds X feet
Physicists and engineers have confounded the units issue by naming energy with non-intuitive names, like: Joule, British Thermal Unit, and Newton-meter. Unless you are forced by a dated professor or textbook to use these meaningless terms, best stick to the kilogram-meter-second standard metric units, which have real physical meaning.
Thus, for example, work = energy = force X distance moved by the force = Fd = Ma X d = (kg.m/sec^2)m; where M = mass in kg, a = acceleration in m/sec^2, d = distance in meters (m) moved by the force. Thus meaningful energy units are kg(m/sec)^2 or kilograms times the square of meters per second.
These are meaningful units because m/sec = v, the velocity of the moving mass. So we can quickly deduce that energy varies as the square of the velocity of the moving body. And, lo and behold, kinetic energy = KE = 1/2 Mv^2 and its units are also kg(m/sec)^2, just like the work units. So we can be pretty sure Fd = 1/2 Mv^2 because their units are the same; so work and kinetic energy are one and the same thing.
Look what we can now do, since the units verify that Fd = 1/2 Mv^2 = Mad. This gives us 1/2 v^2 = ad so that v^2 = 2ad and v = sqrt(2ad), which you should recognize as one of the often used equations to find the velocity of a mass accelerating at a over a distance d.
