I have everything connected the way it is supposed to be, i have the router right next to the computer and the computer receives an excellent signal from the router but when i go to internet explorer i can't access the internet, it tells me that there it no connection detected. I am using a Linksys router. Anyone know what i may be doing wrong? Do you know of any websites that may help me with the connection? Thanks

It's possible that you are not properly entering your WEP key. Without the key, the router might still allow you to get an excellent signal, but it will give you limited or no internet connectivity.

Does the router ask you for a WEP key when you acquire the signal?

If you plug your computer directly into the router, are you able to get an internet connection? If yes, then you are probably having WEP problems (see above). If no, then you are having internet connectivity problems.

Check the security settings on the router. It may be looking for a security key. Many ISP supplied routers use a default key, such as the router serial number on the bottom. your provider should be able to tell you that. Many routers have a reset button on the bottom or back - usually a little hole that you can stick a paper clip in to reset it back to factory. But again, check with your ISP before doing this. Also, the router may be doing MAC authentication. If so, you will have to log into the AP with a wired connection and supply your wireless NIC MAC address before it will talk to you.

Chack proxy settings and make sure that none are set. after which check lan settings and make sure that it is set to automatically obtain IP and DNS servers. disable personal firewalls and anti virus softwares. make sure you put in the correct network encryption key and you can also access the router User Interface and change wireless settings there for example, the wireless channel you are using. one more thing, make sure the router or modem is not placed anywhere near an electrical device and also not in the floor on the carpet. Yes. Linksys has free 24/7 tech support. Call them. They will try to steer you toward their website service, which is good, but calling is better. Phone number on website and also in your users guide for the router.

As you didn't mention plugging the router into a modem, I'm curious; what kind of internet connection are you using, and did it come with a modem?
