Go to the county Court House, Assessor office, or Planning office in the city or county in which you live. If you live in a large city the local Library might have some history on the old houses in the city. Before the house could be split in flats the city zoning and planning committee had to approve it. There also should be an abstract on the house. Ask the owner about the abstract.

The government keeps such records, naming past owners who lived there, and sometimes even their occupations; in Canada, at least. Here it is called the land registry department, as far as I can remember. I've gotten such information myself. Here, you don't need to ask someone else to do it - you can do it yourself. This is intended to help intended buyers, and if you have such an interest, you are entirely rightful in asking for it. Of course, if you're already the owner, your right is even more obvious.

You can ask you loan company that have it or go to the court house they have every house that have been built. I just reorder all my house paper from my mortgage company. IT WAS FREE.
