I don't think so. I just commanded my coffee cup to refill itself and there it sits, totally empty.

It's a classic interpretation of the power of naming, and it turns up in many myths, legends ands stories.

In today's world (the last few centuries), power has come from the ability to rename, to remake in one's own image. Never mind what the Carolinas or New Jersey or Pike's Peak were known as for centuries or millenia: those names are lost - erased - as if they had never been.

likewise, if I can get momentum to taint the name referring to my political opponents, they lose power as they spend effort trying to counter that effort: tax-and-spend "liberals," the "liberal" media, etc.

I read that somewhere before, but I think it just has to do with magical creatures and stuff. I mean if that's true for everyone I don't even know my true name so I don't have power over myself and that's just frustrating

Well, ancient folklore sure thought of it this way. All of us have heard the story Rumplestiltskin. That derived from old stories ehich people had created. Most studies have also shown this is true, so i sure believe that it used to be true

Absolutely. Have you ever noticed that if you call someone @$$hole when they're being one they have a different kind of respect for you?
