You need to look up the phrase 'Lions led by donkeys' as that is a famous saying with regard to the Somme. Look into the attitude oand character of the military leaders especially Haig as he has been critiscised for the way he handle the Somme offensive. However, on the other hand for a balanced arguement you could look at could anyone else have done any better given the extreme stalemate situation and trench warfare conditions? Main thing is really that so many men died and for what?

If memory serves, the Battle of the Somme lasted for about three months. It started on the 1st. of July, with nearly 60,000 British casualties in the first day along (about 20,000 dead).

The battle ended in a bloody stalemate, with over 600,000 casualties on both the Allied (English and French) and the Germans sides. It was a useless, bloody slaughter that proved that the tactic of human-wave frontal assaults were no match against the then current defensive tactics of dug-in troops supported by artillery and machine guns.

When doing your essay, give an introduction about what areas you are going to cover. Then give a brief historical background, planning phase, the first day, the subsequent months and the battle's end. Try and give views of the battle from all sides, not just the British. Round up with lessons that were learnt then and what we now think of it ninety years on.

Remember maps are always useful when writing about battles.

Good luck.

Things to consider: the Pals Battalions (Accrington, Salford), most of these battalions were used in the Somme offencive. Also look at the poetry of both Sassoon and Owen, both give an insight of trench life, and can be considered as primary sources. You could also look at the relationship between those who fought and the staff officers, one that has been described as 'lions led by donkeys.'
You could also if you have the time and the money, journey down to the battlefields of the Somme, the topography will give you an idea of why it was so easy for the Germans to kill so many.
