An internet connection can become slow or stop working due to a number of reasons depending on the type of the connection. Many of the problems can be solved by making software changes or small hardware corrections. Detailed instructions at http://tinyurl.com/yl62gz

I had this problem years ago with a World Online account. They said that it was my equipment not theirs at fault. In the end I ditched them and Joined BT. Funny enough It never ever happened again! (That was a USB cable connection) I now have a Thompson Modem, that is constantly on and that requires a reboot every blue moon (usually due to BT messing about in the exchange)

you may have a problem in your area, or with your actual line into the house, try restarting you computer, and disconnecting the modem etc, otherwise give your service provider a call, i am with telewest and it plays up like that ll the time/

Install an antivirus and search for viruses, maybe your computer has infected. Or you can call your internet service provider and ask for support.

I would not know.
I have cable with no trouble.
Try NTL/Telewest/Virgin Media. They are very forward looking, trying to add ITV to the company.
