It takes a lot of time and work in removing a trunk. You could try using a chain saw or handsaw but again, it takes work. After my father had two pine trees taken down, the company got rid of one trunk by grinding it up and it was gone. My mother chose to keep the other trunk for display. After several years, she got sick of the stump and my father ended up taking an axe to it. It took several weeks until it was ground level and he quit. I jumped in, hacked at it until it was a tad under ground level and just threw a thin layer of dirt on top with grass seeds.
I can tell you that was over ten years ago. The long intensive root systems of both trees are -still- rotting away but has not interfered with the mowing or gardening.
Personally, I think you should get a stump grinder unless you like the idea of exercising while attacking the stump.

Yes, you want to dig around the stump and then severe the roots how ever best you can. A chain saw, axe will work fine. Then take a tractor or 4-wheel drive vehicle and pull the stump out. Depending on what type of tree you have, there may be a main tap root. For example, a pine tree has a tap root, that goes pretty deep into the ground. If you are in an area that allows burning, you can dig out around the stump (trunk as you say), put some diesel fuel at the base, and burn it completely. You could always rent a stump grinder and be done with it in a matter of minutes.

I've removed a few, but have left them for a few years, then chopped @ them with a 10 lb spliting axe & removed all the peat & punky wooden roots & composted them. They sell a product call stump rot, you dill a small hole in ur stump & add this stuff the the hole & the stump rots to a punky tecture in a few months. All the root will rot away, but if ur in a hurry, u could call a tree remover & have them come by & grind it out with a commercial stump grinder.

Rent a stump grinder for $75.00 and get after it.
Once you are done, you can drill as many as possible 1 inch holes in the remaining stump (It will now be about 6 inches below ground level) and pour BROAD LEAF weed control into each hole.
Do not use salt or diesel fuel.
Stump will rot over the next few years.
You may have to fill in low spot with brick sand over the next few seasons,
Don't be surprised to see a lot of mushrooms pop up after 24 months.

Here is the female way. Go to Home Depot and get black and Decker tree truck remover. All you have to do is dig around the trunk, pour it in and watch it die. After that you just pick it up and trash it. Roots and everything else is die.

The roots will rot, it will cause the ground to settle alittle, so you will have to eventually add alittle dirt. One warning, make sure you clear the dirt away from the roots before you use the chainsaw on them, if dirt gets into the blade, it will completely screw up your chainsaw.
