To flash or not to flash... it depends on the hardware.
The whiz kid way to answer the question is to check what the light does when things are working fine, and then to check it again when you get disconnected.
The ordinary way to answer the question is just to find out what lights on that particular piece of hardware mean. (You may learn more from the ordinary way.)
If you have a DSL modem, and then you have a separate router, you definitely bought the router yourself. You might still have the manual, but if it's not handy, just stop in on the website of the company that makes it. The section on the lights (possibly called indicators) should be fairly easy to read.
If you only have one box, which is both your DSL modem and router, and DSL provider is loaning it to you free, see if they gave you a good manual, or call tech support. To get a quick lesson from tech support about what the lights mean, be friendly, polite, and not at all rushed, and start by telling them that you're curious about the lights. If they have lots of people on hold when you call, it's not a good time for a lesson, but they'd help you troubleshoot quickly.
(If you'd like, you can edit your post to tell us the maker, and model of the hardware).

DSL usb modem will have 2 lights
1st is to show the usb connection(constant green)
2nd is your internet connection
constant green = connected with no activity
flashing green = download/uploading or browsing the net
flashing green 9 times and 1 red modem is out of sync with isp and is trying to negotiate a connection
DSL ethernet router/wireless
power light on
"i" on = isp connection ok
"i" flashing = internet activity
if you have connected to your router via ethernet then numbers 1-4 will be lit depending on which port you have used and will be on.
when these are flashing it shows activity.
if you keep being disconnected it is possible that there are issues with your isp(expected with a speed upgrade for up to 4 weeks)
or your exchange may be having some maintenance

If it is anything like mine then it will stay solid when it is online but not performing any activity. It will flash rapidly whilst it is transferring data. As for the power light, that stays solid all the time.
