too early. I had a ultra sound at 5 1/2 weeks and they couldn't see the fetal pole and 2 weeks later we saw and heard the heartbeat...146 BPM. When I was pregnant with my son I saw and heard his heartbeat at 6 weeks 5 days.

Usually doctors should be able to SEE the fetal heart beat quite clearly by about 6 and a half weeks, particularly in a vaginal scan.
By 6 1/2 weeks, and this means 6 1/2 weeks from the last menstrual period (LMP), and not 6 1/2 weeks from the day of conception ( which is of course around the day of ovulation ). In a woman with irregular and slightly longish cycles (say, 35 days verses a usual 28 days), the day of ovulation would actually be postponed to 1 week on top of the 14 days in the usual case, that is, she ovulates on Day 21.
The number of days between the first day of menstruation and the date of ovulation (the follicular phase) is variable, but the number of days between ovulation and the start of the next menses (the luteal phase) is generally rather constant at about 14 days. So if you have a menstrual cycle of 42 days, then you ovulate on Day 28 ! Add 14 days and your next menses will come. Therefore if you have a longish cycle then you ovulate late and your fetus will be less advanced than it should be, meaning it will appear smaller or cannot be seen at all.
Of course, if for other reasons, the fetus has not grown, then it will also show up smaller. The way to make a correct diagnosis is which is to repeat a scan in about 1-2 weeks time, so that those who are smaller because of a date factor will then be found to have grown.
Good luck to you!

YES! My ultrasound with this pregnancy was at 4 weeks and 5 days....it was nothing really! They couldn't hear a heart beat either! They rescheduled me for 2 weeks later and there was a little peanut in the "black hole" which is the sack and they heard to heart beat. I even saw the little flicker that was the heart. A lot happens really quickly in the first weeks of pregnancy. I bet they rescheduled you for a couple weeks (or they will) and all will be fine! I am 14 weeks now and everything is fine! Relax and enjoy the pregnancy! Take your vitamins! GOOD LUCK!

I had one at 5-1/2 weeks. It was a vaginal one. I could see a sac and a beating heart. It was just a little blip on teh screen. You didn't say if it was a vaginal scan or not. Wait a week or so and go back for another one, but request a vaginal one...its much more accurate at the beginning of a pregnancy.

I had an ultrasound at about 9 weeks and we could see heart beat, but it was black like you describe, but no white part. Possible that everything is fine, trust the DR since they are the experts.

It is too early to see a heart beat. I got my first ultrasound at 6 weeks and he looked like a little rice kernal. there was practically nothing there. Dont worry. You will see it very soon.

I went at 6 weeks, it is too early to hear the heartbeat. But if they did a Vaginal Ultrasound(as they did with me) you can see the babies heart beating.
