The guidelines have just changed actually. The World Health Organisation has just conducted a huge study of infants and redesigned its growth expectations charts. Normal infant growth is now based on breastfed babies, who are leaner and healthier than bottlefed babies.

Babies lose approx 10% of their birth weight within the first week.
All babies are different but as a mum of 3 I would say that they gain on average a 1.5 pounds per month within the first 3 months
They should as a guide double their birthweight wihin the first 6 months
But all babies are different, providing you feel that your child is eating enough then there is nothing to panic about.
Some children are just tall and slim, some are not as active.
If you have any major concerns speak to your health proffessional.

It's very, very easy with your first baby to get hung up on what's "normal", what "should" be happening - but babies are individuals, and most of the time when they don't conform it's absolutely nothing to worry about.

So long as (s)he feeds regularly, is gaining some weight most weeks (not even necessarily every week), and seems healthy and happy in him/herself, there's really nothing to worry about.

Take him or her for a health visitor weighing at least once a month for the first 6 months, and they'll soon let you know if there's anything to be concerned about.

Which there almost certainly won't be.

babies should double in first 3 months but then every baby is different, all my 3 have been different weights, my first daughter lost abit of weight and going by the health book she was really underweight. but then my argument is what is the normal weight, my daughter was a small baby in length as well, like me and her father, yet her brother and sister are bigger.

All babies are different, and gain weight at different rates.
The average weight gain is between 1-6oz a week.
A lot depends on how active they are,and on their sleep patterns.

My kids are a little older but an acceptable standard has always been to double their birthweight in the first six months and treble it by their 1st birthday.
