I believe Merv Griffin had the first daytime talk show which started in 1962.

I don't think it was Phil Donahue, but he definitely took many subjects to the next level and made talk shows better. Then came Oprah and it was all over !
I think it was probably Mike Douglas or that blonde haired guy whose name ...oh wait....Dick Cavett.
