there are commercial products you can buybut if you want to save money you can use the old fashioned way.take a couple handfulls of ash from your last fire,add water,use a stiff brush and some elbow grease.works just as well. have fun

You will have to go to like Home Depot or Lowe's and get muric acid and a couple of real good stiff brushes. I would also invest in a pair of industrial strength rubber gloves and some safety goggles too. The bottle of acid will give you directions how to mix with water and to what strength to use for the fireplace or simply ask your salesperson that question. Make sure your you have your windows and doors open when using the acid, plenty of ventilation and keep children and pets far away from this product.

I use 500 detergent ( i am 90% sure thats what its called) from my local contractors supply house; it cleans brick really well and is safe for the cement or mud holding you brick together.

there are non toxic chemicals out there now for this purpose, call you local building supply and inquire... muratic acid is very toxic... and should never be used inside a home...
