I try to make a point when I start thinking of a memory
that makes me sad or hurtful to me --as soon as I start to think of that time I try to stop it before it starts to consume my thoughts.
I would redirect my thoughts .Like where ever you are at the time .Say you are driving down the road by yourself --start looking at what is around you -the city you may be in --or the nice country view --what ever your surroundings are at the time.
If your at home and you start thing of the past --start taking to some one not so much about your thoughts but maybe ask them something about there day --anything to redirect your thoughts.
I hope I wrote this for you to understand .I my self have done this and it worked for me --always put your mind on something that you like or maybe that was up-lifting to you.Always try to find something good in all things.
I hope this helps -- and you did not find this to be a silly answer

Sorry, you can't get rid of bad memories.
Here's what I do...
I tell myself that everything in my life is a learning experience. If something bad happens, I run thru the memory and figure out what things NOT to do so it doesn't happen again. That way it seems like I learned a good lesson out of a bad situation.

Keep yourself busy and make some new ones!! Any memories, good or bad, are going to stay with you...but you can stop thinking about the bad one so much by concentrating on the good ones and making some new ones. If the memories are extremely bad, such as a rape, etc., you may want to try counseling,

You can't get rid of memories without facing them first. I had the same problem and to finally rid my brain of the horrifying memory I had to analyze it before I forgot it. Find out why it happened and and then you can forget it.

I am being totally serious and not a smart a$$,
"DEAL WITH IT"
if you don't it will not go away. my theory has been,
talk about it, cry about it, toss it around, hell puke it up, deal with it and move on. go through the whole grieving process.
