kreevich, are you mad??? If the draft is reestablished there will be a national service option instead of a military one. Do you actually believe this?

Why don't you tell this to all of the maimed Vietnam Veterans and all of the families who lost loved ones during that war.

In past wars with drafts, most so called Conscientious Objectors served as medics and other "non-combat" frontline personnel. And do you think our current enemy will respect red cross armbands on our military men and women? To them the red cross would be a distinguishable firing target!

Anyway, I don't think restarting the draft is such a bad idea. The youth of this country has gotten too soft. Besides, many liberals have often stated that we are the only "civilized" country that has the death penalty, basically comparing the US to Europe. Well, many European countries do have a draft, so we are yet again out of step with our "civilized" European allies. Some of these countries are: Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and others.

Rangel, according to the article, introduced a draft bill 2 years ago in order to make a political point. He ultimately voted against it. He's planning on reintroducing it when the new congress convenes in January because he apparently feels in light of threats posed by Iran and N Korea, that our military is under manned. Criticizing him and making it sound like a democratic conspiracy makes no sense. It's an important issue and one worthy of debate. Ultimately if there is not enough bipartisan support it won't pass. In the meantime however if the introduction of the bill forces a serious debate and examination of our current troop strength then it's worth wild.

Actually this was talked about prior to the elections. I guess a little research into the candidates vrs just voting against Bush might have been in order. If I remember the statements here, the right was accused of fearmongering when saying the dems wanted the draft. But Rangel is right, a draft is warranted now and hopfully it will pass.

I'm sorry but the draft is coming. Accept it and get used to it and start dreaming up excuses now.
Lets face the facts here ok? There are not enough troops on the ground to win this war in Iraq, there just aren't they need at least twice as many. Four times as many would be nice, just an overwhelming show of power to end this nonsense.
So we do need it whether people want to admit it or not. Two things that are going to happen is the draft and taxes being raised to pay for this war.
We are not leaving Iraq until a stable US friendly government is set up in place. Republicans start the war, Democrats pretend like they are going to fix it, get elected bring back the draft and raise taxes. You can deny it all you want, but please in three years make sure to send me a wow you were right email care of stephanieloveswater@yahoo.com....

Think......proposition of the draft will ONLY lessen America's resolve to fight the war in Iraq. It's a political stunt to tap into A vein that would truly suck the life out of the will to carry out what the Republicans have attempted. Thus guaranteeing Democratic leadership of our nation for years to come. The political thirst for power is unquenchable of both parties. I'm so sick of the smoke and mirrors and I will only vote for moderate candidates no matter the party!!!

If you voted for a Democrat because you thought there wouldn't be talk of a draft if Democrats took over then yes you were duped. But then if that is the case you weren't listening to what folks like Charley Rangle were saying long before the last election and it's your fault as much as theirs.

I sincerely doubt if it will happen at this time, however, it is possible. America needs more men in the military and a draft is the only sure way of getting them to join. I would pull troops out of Kosovo, Germany, Okinawa and move them into the areas that really need them.

Just one idiot democrat. He's trying to make a point that we wouldn't end up in wars if rep. has a chance of their own kid going in a draft. I'm a con my son already went. I think charlie is going to regret his ignorance. I mean what if it really does pass? there' s gonna be a lot of p.o.'d dem's out there.

Shiraz, I am confused about which direction you are embarrassing yourself at. First the neocons stated that "libs" would "cut and run", now that the draft is being considered, you are saying you dont want to particpate. Which slander are you proposing?

I'm conservative and I am for a draft. I say 18-45 year old men and women. No deferments, no exemptions except for the disabled, and that depends on the degree because they could serve in supportive roles! If you enjoy the freedoms that this country provides, you should have to serve to protect those freedoms. Do you think there will be mass exodus to Canada? If so, we don't want those people here anyway.
