There was a recent coup attempt in Madagascar and I was wondering how that affected members of the Peace Corps. Their website is not helpful for trying to find out what the status of each country is.

1. The situation in Madagascar is calm. There was a brief incident, but hardly a need to evacuate - lol. Have a look at recent BBC reports.

2. My country's government provides up to date advice for its citizens regarding every country in the world. For Madagascar it currently includes this:
"On 17/18 November 2006 Antananarivo International Airport was closed briefly as a result of a disturbance involving a retired army commander at a military barracks near the airport. The airport has now reopened and the situation in Antananarivo is reported to be calm. This incident is believed to be connected to the elections on 3 December.

Tension could rise as the elections scheduled for 3 December 2006 approach. There are frequent political demonstrations. You should monitor events through the local media and avoid all demonstrations, rallies and other large public gatherings.

Tamatave airport (TMM) in the east of Madagascar has been closed to international flights from 7 October 2006 until further notice.

Most visits to Madagascar are trouble free."

3. Perhaps your government also has online country-by-country information, but you can find that out for yourself, I would hope.
