Depends on the country. The UK currently has the Labour Party under Tony Blair in ... the US has cohabitation - a Bush (republican) white house, along with a majority-democrat legislature. The rest of Europe have various coalition governments.

Generally presidential systems like the US (both federally and in its states), France & South America elect their president seperately from their legislature so there will be times when the one is controlled by the other party than the other.

And in parliamentary systems like the UK, Germany, and Italy, the legislature elects the head of government and the entire cabinet of heads of ministries from among the congressmen.

In presidential systems the cabinet is appointed by the president - he gets to put whoever he wants to into the cabinet.

Countries that have proportional representation (Germany, Italy & the EU parliament) can have either one, and countries that have constituencies (US, UK, France, Poland) can also have either one.

If you currently resisde in the United kingdom, New labour is currently in office. Tony blair is the parties leader and therefore the prime minister of the UK.

Labour is now in its fouth term (term = approx 5 years (but dont quote me on either of those statements)) under tony blairs government, but he will (hopefully) be gone by next year. unfortunately, Gordon Brown will probably win the leadership contest and become the new prime minister.

however, after saying all of this, if you have any sense in you, you will vote conservative at the next general election,

Republicans control both Houses until the end of the year. Then, sadly, the majorities will go to the Democrats who will once again prove that tax and spend is the only thing they know how to do. Get ready for at least a few years of Nancy Pelosi and her sadly left wing, San Francisco ultra-liberal mantra.

Depends on which office you mean!

Republicans control the Executive Branch, Democrats control the Legislative Branch, and the Judicial Branch is non-partisan (theoretically), so right now it is kind of equal.
