Im assuming you meant just the CPU when you say desktop computers..because monitors, if you dont apply auto-off will certainly overheat for a short period of time.. Desktop Computers (CPUs specifically) are actually designed to last atleast a year without shutting down.. although some other factors may affect its duration to withstand without shutting down like surge in electricity, blackouts, surrounding heat, dust, hardware problems, overheating due to short in its circuits..

We did just that in our office.. Our file server is just a desktop computer.. it has been On for more than a year now.. Of course we turned off just the monitor..

Again assuming all conditions Ive mentioned above are good, then your computer can last very, very long even more than a year..:)

It would stay on until you turn it off or you have a power failure or until a software upgrade, install or removal forced a reboot. As long as you keep the area around it clear it shouldn't be a problem. But I do recomend shutting it down at LEAST once a year and having the insides cleaned out to get red of the dust that will collect in there.

It really depends on the use and the operating system!

Most windows machines tend to crash (notorious blue screen) or have to reboot for changes to be made.

Linux and other machines based on a unix architecture tend to stay alive as long as the hardware is working.

My linux machine thanks also to my UPS has been up for a year and a half now, and last time I rebooted it only to add a new hard drive.

Having said that, the longest I have managed to keep a windows machine up is for a couple of months but without using it that much.

I hope this helps!

Desktop computers actually last longer if they are left running...

Everytime you start up your computer, the hard drives motor must start up and spin, this startup proccess is the most wear on the computer of anything.

Generally speaking, if you left the PC on and never shut it off, it could last a good 10 years.

Would be interesting to find out, however remember you are using electricity all the time the computer is on.

What do you mean "last" ?
Stay on ?
It should stay on until the time set in power options is met or until there is a power outage.
