I'll reiterate what the others have said with one exception...
You may NOT like it. It seems that the one thing that really grated on the Tenchi fan's nerves was the complete retelling of the story... again.
Some characters seem "out of character" every now and again and the animation is quite different from the OVAs or the Tenchi Universe series. As far as continuity goes though it seems to be taking a spin on the Tenchi Universe series as TiT has Kiyone (Mihoshi's partner) in it. Whereas she was nowhere to be found in the original OVAs.
All that put aside... if you ARE a fan of Tenchi Muyo than I too suggest that you rent it and check it out for yourself.
I'm such a fan of the series that I actually own it on DVD, but I have to admit that it isn't my favorite of the Tenchi incarnations.
But since Ryoko's in it... I'm happy! ^___^

It's one of the series that has one of those Love/Hate relationships, that's for sure. Either most like it, or most do not. I think it has more of a dramatic element than the other series.
Personally, I'm a big fan of the series, and I'm doing a fandub of Tenchi in Tokyo.
The storyline is different, especially how all the characters relate to the plot. For example, Tenchi is not a descendant of the Jurai royal family, Washu is a wanted criminal that is Ryoko's sidekick. In addition to that, she isn't Ryoko's "mother."
I could only think of those differences, but hey...I'd watch it because Tenchi does choose someone to love, and it would be interesting to watch. ^^ And...Ryoko does go on a date with Tenchi! Who would not want to see that? =D
Out of the four Tenchi series, this one is my absolute favorite.
It's up to you. If a lot of people say no, then you would be discouraged to watch it, without even truly knowing if you liked it or not. There's a 50/50 chance, so go for it!

PS- if you choose not to rent it, there are always sites(mostly torrent) to download the whole series.
Check Google Videos to see if someone uploaded it already. Then you can watch streaming video! =P

I'm a huge Tenchi Muyo fan and my favorite is Tenchi Universe. Tenchi in Tokyo is ok but not as good as Tenchi OVA or Tenchi Universe. But if you are a Tenchi fan, it is a must see.

I saw Tenchi in Tokyo back when it premiered on Cartoon Network. I wouldn't recommend it, though. It lacked the spark and chemistry of the past Tenchi series.

I agree much with Lighthawk. But i still say its worth it. But its worth ONLY renting. Buy it if you are a hardcore tenchi fan.
