I am a Native American Indian. Not just "Indian"...Hindu is Hindu Indian=descending from India.
Christopher Columbus make a mistake when he landed on an island and thought he was in India. But leave it alone as the name has been for so long it is a controversy that can not be changed. That's why on specific forms it is called or addressed "Native American"...but history application is Indian....to hard to change all the history books and etc.
Are you opposed to sharing? American Indian is slang. Sorry if this offends you.
The Native Americans tried to correct this years ago, but were not heard!

I'm 51 years old and I'm a Inupiaq Eskimo living in the Arctic Region of Alaska and have been wondering about the same thing. I definitely don't consider myself Indian....Aren't they from India? I wish the white race would stop putting labels on us the true Native Americans and also leave us alone to live our way of life and culture...After all I live on the Last Frontier and want it to remain pristine for future generations. The whole North Circumpolar Regions of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Finland and Siberia are considered "The Inuit Homeland", and we can speak and understand the same language in all these areas...Just different dialects...We eat the same native wildlife with rich oils from the seal, whale, walrus, and the fat from Reindeer and Caribou to make Eskimo Ice Cream as a natural energy bar during the long cold winters which we love...Maybe if we keep bugging the government, maybe we can change the history books and tell the true story of each and every human culture on this planet....and return what is rightfully theirs to manage in terms of wildlife and all natural resources including land ownership.....And above all others, compensation and given back dignity and a world viewed public apology.....

Columbus tried to find a western route to India.

After sailing across the Atlantic Ocean for 10 weeks, land was sighted by a sailor called Rodrigo Bernajo. Columbus himself took the credit for this sighting. He landed on a small island in the Bahamas which Columbus named San Salvador. He claimed the island for the king and queen of Spain. The people living on the islands that Columbus went to were called the Arawaks and the Caribs. Although the Arawaks were peaceful people, the Caribs were more war-like. Columbus called all the people he met in the islands Indians because he was sure that he had reached the Indies. When Columbus reached Cuba, he thought it was the mainland of Japan.

It's because Christopher Columbus called Native Americans "Indians" because he thought that he was in the Indies. From history, that is why Native Americans being called Indians is something that was carried from generation through generation through American history books. Not everyone refers to Native Americans as Indians. I don't (my family are Native Americans) and the Native Americans I know describe themselves from the tribe they belong to not as Indians. I had to edit the information he thought he was in India because it was really the Indies he thought he was in. I provided a link for you to look over to see how the situation occured.

I am sure yo are joking about why people from India might be called Indians. Because they ARE!!! when you are older you will realized that changing a label on a culture takes many, many years and people willing to change 100%. I find the word "n*****" offensive, but many black people still use the word. It will never go away until everyone stops using it.

Good question and the white people call themselves Americans and give Hispanics and blacks labels in front. Like African American, Hispanic American when truthfully the "real" true Americans are the so called Indians. So why don't they call themselves European American? I think it is all a crock of bull.

Indian has evolved into a generic term in the western hemiphere, hence losing it's original meaning. Much the same as "queer" or "cu nt" or a hundred other words have lost their original meanings.
