I have just had delivered a sheet of toughened glass. It was fine on deliverly (so I signed) but when i moved it it smashed. Surely this shoul dnot have happened. I called the company and they basically said tough luck its glass what do you expect. Whilst I appreicate that glass gets broke surely toughened glass is stronger and so should have not broken so soon.
Does anyone have any suggestions? or has this happened to anyone else?

Hmmmm , i work in the glass industry , thrilling it is. Toughened glass is much stronger , but if you catch the edge of the glass it will shatter as easily as anything. The strength is in the face and not the edges.

p.s. i hope it wasnt my company

Toughened glass by law should break into peices no bigger than 20mm. You are thinking of laminated that should crack but not smash

toughened glass is not shatterproof.

All glass will break.

The really hard glass used for shop doors will withstand blows from a sledge hammer but has been known to shatter when a person walked into it.

Only laminated glass won't shatter but it can still crack and give off small splinters.

All glass must be treated with care to protecting it from twisting, taking any shock from any source. The glass is only as good as it's specification when it is secured properly in the frame or situation it is designed for.

It's toughened glass, not indestructable glass. Toughened glass is stronger, up to 4-5 times stronger than normal glass, but it still breaks.

See below.

Our bus-stop supposedly had toughened glass, it has been smashed a couple of times yet. It is suppose to crack not break into pieces when it smashes.

Toughened glass is temepered (usually with heat) to be **slightly** harder to break but is meant to break into small squares (like car windows) to reduce possible injuries from stabbing / lacerations.

Some days you`re the statue, some days you`re the pigeon!!! Buy another piece and chalk it up as a learning experience. Next time treat the edges as if they were "eggs"!!! Been there done that!!!!
