A draft does not eliminate volunteers--I was a volunteer during Vietnam and there was also a draft.( I volunteered before the war started-President Kennedy asked us to ask what we could do for the country and not what the country could do for us)
But the Guard and Reserve Troops should not serve more than one tour and the regular Army andMarine troops need relief too.
So I say a sustained war requires a draft and if we are not willingto support a draft we do not support a sustained war such as we have now in Iraq. Draft or bring home the troops.

No to the Draft. If things get rough and personal, I guarantee you that we have plenty of brave souls who will run to enlist. They will make America proud.

No. The draft creates problems in their own right. You need a big infrastructure just to manage the draft and all its issues - draft dodgers, lottery issues, etc. The real issue when speaking of the use of forces is 1) A realistic goal and strategy - end state - so the generals and troops know when their job is done and, 2) a willingness and dedication among the administration and appointed officials to support that effort. This support can't come in half measures, either. We can't put division after division in harm's way while we cut troop strength nation-wide. Additionally, we can't cut those programs that protect those troops - body armor, up-armored HMMWVs. Funding high-tech, high-dollar programs for the Air Force while we don't put meaningful R&D and money into Soldier support items is NOT caring for the Soldier. We will experience REAL recruiting and retention problems if we keep treating our troops this way. Patriotism and love of country only go so far when you're on your third tour in a place you never wanted to be in in the first place.

No, the over used Guard & Reserve collected money for many years for 1 week-end a month & 2 weeks in the summer...I think bush sent them to Iraq for personal gain but that is a whole different issue! An unlimited supply of young people (supplied by a draft) is not the way......

The Draft would just give Bush more fodder (usually the poor) to waste in his stinking resource war in Iraq. Nothing like forcing people to service the demented goals of an idiot. On the other hand, the draft would create a political atmosphere where the young will become energized and start to think outside the secure box of indifference they have become used to. It would be the sixties all over again and maybe this time we could get it right and start to come into balance with the world instead of trying to rule it. When your country is wrong, it should be grabbed by the short hairs and corrected, not supported.

Yes, I agree, a draft is if not needed, it is warranted. Rangel is right, our enemies are growing and have been. A draft could give us a quick build up we need to get a hand on some of these world problems springing up. Our enemies are trying to beat us in a war of attrition, a draft can give us the advantage.

And no, I am not saying this lightly. I have a nephew who would probably go and my son will be drafting age in a few years. I probably would be personally effected.

A draft, no. What we need is more people to volunteer to do their part. But then it takes time to train even volunteers and then Congress has to fund the increased military size.

I am for a draft. I say 18-45 year old men and women. No deferments, no exemptions except for the disabled, and that depends on the degree because they could serve in supportive roles! If you enjoy the freedoms that this country provides, you should have to serve to protect those freedoms. Do you think there will be mass exodus to Canada? If so, we don't want those people here anyway.

I really shouldn't care, because I'm too old to be drafted, but I have always been of the opinion military service whould be voluntary. It is too strong of an issue and is against many peoples beliefs and morals. I will admit though, we have to do something with Iraq.

i think you are right and it is really very clear to me and it should be to everyone else that we have to pull out or send more troops.
they've been asking for more troops for a long time now and now that rumsfeld is out of the way maybe we can straighten this thing up and get our boys home.
my only concern though is that the war will escalate into something uncontrollable

No, the present troops are volunteers and well trained. We learned in Vietnam that draftees are both poorly trained and have a low morale. We have plenty of volunteers.
