What if we did have a draft? Wouldn't that be put up or shut up time?

A draft is sometimes a necessary evil. It seems that these days, more than at any time in the past, people have forgotten that freedom is not without cost. In order for a society such as ours to continue, sacrifice must be made. Those who came before us made such sacrifices. A sense of entitlement does not guarantee you get what you want out of life. This society depends on the efforts and sacrifices of it's citizens.

I did my hitch as did many other in years past. And like many of those who did serve in past wars on foreign soil, I would gladly go again. I find it hard to understand the mindset of those who incessantly complain about the possibility that they will have to go do their part. Do you enjoy your freedom to vote? Freedom to travel from state to state without having to show papers to cross the border to another state? Enjoy being able to speak freely your opinions loudly and without fear of being whisked away in the night never to be seen again? It does not come free just because you were hatched. Someone, somewhere in the past did what was necessary to make certain you have these freedoms.

Put up or shut up? Absolutely. Time to suck it up and grow a pair.

That is exactly what they are saying. I don't want a draft because I don't want my cousins (who are male and will most likely be a draft for men) going to war. That is the reason against the draft, fear of seeing your son in a war.

I don't think that being against the draft is the same as being against sending your child to war. Everyone is against that. The all volunteer force is comprised of people who "CHOSE" to enlist. They chose a profession that could and most likely would place them in harms way. Many do it as their only means to a better life. Many do it and remain in for many years because of a love for the military life.

If my son or daughter decided to enlist I would support them. If they chose not to I would support them. Its hard to support a law that would require service against your will.

That being said, if sufficient peril existed for the nation, it is every citizens duty to rise up and defend the country. I would support a draft only if a true state of war existed, (ie, one where the full force of the military would be used).

If such a situation existed, and our elected officials would take off the kid gloves and get down to business. By that I mean no more pandering to the left and their bleeding hearts. If an insurgent attacks our troops and then retreats into a village, damn precision bombing, level the entire village and then move on. Eventually the locals get the picture, harboring people who attack us is bad.

When the support of the local populace disappears, the insurgency disappears.

Not at all. There is nothing worse then a group of people doing a job they didnt want to do. What happen at Abu Ghraib. Professional soldiers took care of business and weekend warriors made them look bad.
Until the attitude toward the military in the country changes dramatically, there is no point is the draft. We need people on the job who are willing to volunteer to do it not people who are forced to be there.
Draft at this time would be a colossal waste of money and and time.

ask any military higher up and they will agree that a person that is forced to fight will cause more damage than good. During WW1 and WW11 there was more patriotism nation wide. Now people are too lazy and apathetic. I disagree whole heartily that you are saying "against sending your son or daughter to war" I dont want someone next to my son or daughter that doesnt want to be there. They get people killed instead of kill people.

what has to be done is take politics out of war and let the men and women who fight wars, fight the war. If the liberal agenda would have let this happen alot less of our men and women would be dead and they would have all been home by now.

No. It's saying if your son or daughter doesn't feel it's their duty and obligation to defend this country it's their choice.

If we did have a draft it's the liberals who would be doing the majority of the ducking. What do I have to back that up? Look at how the military votes today? About 2 or 3 to 1 Republican. The majority of the military are much more conservative than the rest of the country. Liberals are always the first to cut funding to the military. Been that way for all my voting life and I'm 61.

No, it's not. I would fully support my child enlisting in the military. I know that it is one of the most important jobs these are. However, I believe that ou military has been far more effective as a volunteer effort. Our current soldiers are dedicated to their task and very well trained. The same cannot be said of soldiers who are only there because they have been drafted. With military enlistment at an all-time high, I see no reason we should water down our military.

The problems with present day children.
The moment they hear the word draft.
They all ran back to mummy crying at loss on what they were going to do out therre.
Instead of having fun in travelling to different places and see the world.
They all thought they must be at the front lines.
Even the elder do not want them out there but at least they have something to do like working in the mess or mechanic and learn some skills.
When they leave their tour of duty they can always look forward to a better paying job back in civvy street later on.
Can be a cook or a luandry men.
Try and explain to the young one that it is someting like a boy scout out for picnic.
So the elders can have a rest while they relieve the kickens or office work in planet of apes.
Only the professionals will be at the frontlines for problems solving .
Not little school boys they stay in camps.
When I was young don't even have the opportunity to have fun out there in planet of apes.

The draft forces people into something without choice. If the liberals so believe in freedoms why would this even be a question??? The military is made up of people who choose to fight for their country. If you set up a draft it should include everyone of every age that is physically fit enough to fight. Like Israel!

Pretty much, but let's say hypothetically if China stepped back from us and supported North Korea and Iran in a more harsh tone? Then it wouldn't even be a question to ask from my point of view. My children would be pushed to pursue the glory of being the next greatest generation. I worry for my great, great, great grandchildren if countries as Iranian and North Korean extremism wielding nuclear bombs.
Though in my heart of hearts I feel the Chinese will find it far more desirable to be the country to put the final nail in the coffin of these extremist regimes. Their economy is interdependent on ours and they are as Nixon said,"The next sleeping giant of the world.".
