My wife has one. She has the copper one withOUT the hormone release (which is basically the same as taking BC pills, so don't do that one if given a choice). She said it was a little uncomfortable when they put it in, but that it didn't really hurt. You can have sex immediately after they put it in, because the way it works is that it keeps the uterus moving so that an embryo can't cling to it. My wife said after it was in she couldn't even tell it was still there and can't feel it. However, every now in then when I go deep into her, it'll bang up against my penis and it kinda hurts. Your husband will just have to learn how to do it if you're a bit shallow down there like my wife is.

Good luck, and email me if you have any additional questions.

I got one put in after I had my son. I love it!! It did not hurt going in but was just a bit uncomfortable. You can have sex that same day if you are feeling up to it. There can be some bleeding and/ or spotting associated with having it inserted. This will go away. It is not at all uncomfortable once there and you can't even tell it is there. I did have to go back and get the "strings" trimmed as my husband could feel them and he said it wasn't fun. But after that, no problems at all. I have had mine in for about 6 months now.

I had the Mirena IUD put in about a week ago. They have to put it in while you're on your period so that your cervix is more relaxed and dialated. I'll be honest, I was not ready for how bad it hurt. But the reason why it hurt me so bad is because I have an extremely retroverted uterus (meaning it leans backward instead of forward, which isn't uncommon). The doctor had to keep pushing to get it in deep enough, causing me to cramp really bad, almost pushing me to tears. I had to go back 6 days after having it put in to be checked out with an ultrasound machine to make sure it was in right. It was, but because of the shape of my uterus it wasn't up as far as the doctor would have liked for it to be, but it was okay. The day I had it put in I cramped just a little and that was it. The next day I had forgotten I even had it. Three days after getting it put in my husband and I had sex, and it was a little uncomfortable at first, but after a few minutes it wasn't noticable at all. Now when my husband and I have sex neither one of us notice it. I am glad I got it. You more or less just put it in and forget it, unlike the pill. Mine comes out in 2011!!

well I had the old version there was no pain with putting it in, you have to wait like all about 4 to 6 weeks I never followed that rule though They did not seem to be uncomfortable but the version I had in became recalled, My mother also used an IUD she had the copper kind and she just had it removed after 30 years so they work well also.

The actual insertion will feel like a pinch kinda like when hey do a pap smear. After wards for a day or two you might have cramping which is normal your body is going to attempt to reject the IUD (its a foreign object) However I advice my patients to take 1 600mg of Ibuprofen 40 min before their scheduled fitting and continue to take it for up to 24 hours after fitting.
If you have 2 or 3 weeks before insertion I would take evening Prime rose pills to help soften your cervix and make the procedure less painful. You take 1 orally everyday for the 1st week and on the 2nd you to one orally and one vaginally and on the 2nd week up it to 2 orally and 2 vaginally and on the last week 3 and 3. Its also good for when its removal time

I had an IUD put in about 7 months ago. It really hurt me to the point that I passed out. I had terrible cramps, naseua and extreme fatigue. I finally had mine taken out after a few weeks. It just was not for me.
