I'm looking for a natural or herbal way to curb the mood swings associated with PMS. I have TERRIBLE mood swings, to the point that I avoid my family because I don't want to start an argument (I get very nasty and sarcastic). I do not want drugs as I tried lexapro and it made me numb--no anger, but no joy, or happiness either. Any suggestions?

My husband used to use a good 'old fashioned' remedy...a very large and potent margarita...after a couple of those I was mellow as a kitten, but I don't even want to be around him or in the same general area anymore! GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!! I love him, don't get me wrong, it's all my hormones--no marital trouble.

Go to a natural health food store and ask them. They know about all of these things. Read this.

Calcium, excercise, cognitive behavoural therapy, relaxation techniques and/or yoga and reduced salt intake before and during your period. People talk about evening primrose oil but, I tried it as a teen and it didn't do anything. Herbal medicines only work on mild or non-existant cases. I'm sure you've heard of St. John's Wort.

I know you don't want drugs but, 'the pill' has worked wonders for me. If you haven't tried birth control pills, it might be worth a try. I hated SSRI's too. All of my PMS symptoms have not cleared up but, on the pill I'm more like a pissed off kitten than a raging tigeress. Also, the pill makes my periods completely predictable thus making pms predictable. It's easier to deal with when you know it's coming. Good luck!

I'm feeling your pain believe me. I suffer from PMDD (Prmenstrual Dysphoric Disorder), which is a severe form of PMS, to the degree that medication is sometimes prescribed.
I refuse to take antidepressant medication to put a bandaid on a problem that is hormonal in nature. These drugs are very dangerous, as they upset the balance of neurotransmitters in your brain. They have dangerous long-term effects, such as killing off receptor sites for brain chemicals.
So what do I do? I have found through lots of research, and trial and error, that a healthy diet and daily exercise-especially 10 days before starting my period, is the best way to manage.
Also, it is helpful to keep a daily log of symptoms, to establish a pattern. Awareness is key! If you can get a heads up on when your symptoms will present, then you can try to plan important events around them to minimize conflict. If your family is understanding and willing to help, you might let them know ahead of time when you will be a little more sensitive.
Try to remind yourself during difficult times that tomorrow is a new day and it will get better. Over time it will be easier to manage your symptoms.
Good luck!

I have the same problem the only solution I found drug free is to cut myself off from the world until the mood swings pass, I refuse to take drugs for it and since I don't know what else to do I just become very distant for a few days, PMS mood swings are the worst especially when you have no control over the emotions coming out.

Before the moods start.....no salt, no caffine, no alcohol (no fun eh?), lots of rest and excersise. I dont know if it works or not but I am trying it this month as if I dont my husband is going to move out for a week.
Oh I also heard evening primrose is supposed to help.
Good luck.
