I think these are the best board games I've ever found but which do you prefer?

The answer to your questions depends largely on what you look for in a game, and who you would typically be playing the games with.

To the advantage of Carcassonne, it's playable with as few as two people and more than 4, where Settlers of Catan is limited (in the basic game) to 3 or 4 players.

What Carcassonne lacks, however, is any incentive for cooperative play, which may be what you want out of a game. For me, the choice is Carcassonne as I am typically playing with a large group of friends, or 2 player with my wife or daughter.

Between the two I'd take Catan in a heartbeat. Carc isn't a horrible game but I just don't have fun playing it at all anymore. I used to like it but now it just seems to take too long for all the decision making you do. The decisions just seem too obvious and if you draw a couple road tiles in a row then it seems to take forever before you can make a good move. Settlers has its own problems but I still have a lot of fun with that.

I've only played Settlers online, but I've played Carcassonne with my family. They all liked it well enough to play another game right afterwards, even though I won. I play it online constantly. Since I haven't played Settlers with actual people yet, I can't tell you which one is really "best", but Carcassonne is the one I've played most.
