theres a lot of things. if you have x amount of money in the bank and need y amount of money for rent and food then spending z amount of money on clothes will keep you in your spending limit! haha! or if for some reason your boss decides to build a wall and you have x & z but the equasion is x + y= z. i dunno man. algebra sucks but until they take it off the needed for graduation list your stuck with it.

Mathematics is the language of science and algebra is used every single day by scientists, engineers, architects, economists.

It great value is that allows you to represent quantities as letters rather than numbers. This means that you can describe things generally rather than specifically each time. For example:
A = pi* r^2 gives the area of a circle.Imagine having to remember the area of a circle for every possible radius.

Also, everyday people use algebra everyday, probably without thinking about it. For example, changing money for a holiday.
£1 = $1.87 and you want to change £200. You brain is actually using

y = 1.87x - C

where y represents the amount of money you have in £, x represent the amount in $ and C is a constant representing the amount of commission required by the bank.

Some other examples: how much paint to paint the walls of your room; what interest will I get on my savings if they reach a certain value; what is 90 degrees F in centigrade; what mpg am I getting from my car.

Many good answers.
I feel that learning algebra (wait till you get to trig, geometry, calculus, etc.) teaches one how to think, how to reason, how to plan and take steps to get a solution to a problem, whether it is involves math, chess or any of our other daily activities.

But, that's just me.

Some people do use the things they learned in Algebra and some people don't its all a matter of what you choose as your career, and sometimes you use it and don't know it.

you know algebra teaches you how to think, how to proof,...
when you become older you will see it behind any phisycs subject. well i think physics wouldn't reach this level without math. so be more patient. i think time will answer your question my honey.
