Don't forget Rod's history, back in the late 60's he was the real deal. Led Zep, Jeff Beck, everyone wanted to work with him. The Faces could have been bigger than The Who or Zeppelin, but unfortunately he followed the other route. Still was an amazing singer in his day.
I'm a massive Purple fan and love Gillan. His range is amazing, he is a great showman and considered a legend. BUT don't forget, he had his bad times too, remember Ian Gillan Band Mark 1 and his Black Sabbath attempt?
So I have to give it to Rod (begrudgingly)

You can't compare them as they are both so different and good in their own ways. Rod is more versatile and has talent for all types of music - so I'd have to go for him.
