This habit of mine isn't so bad because it cured my other bad habits like chewing my nails and forgetting to brush my teeth but lately its all I think about. I'm afraid of losing control when this habit becomes an obssession.

Well, since you didn't explain what the habit is you'd like to rid yourself of now, I probably can't give you really helpful, specific advice. However, many people have found that taking in an accurate knowledge of Bible truth has helped them gain the self-control to overcome seemingly insurmountable and ingrained habits and feelings such as extreme violent behavior, racial prejudice, smoking, among other things. I realize you are not likely speaking of such a habit, but if it could help people overcome those huge obstacles, I'm sure it could certainly help you as well. The reason people can gain self-control from studying the Bible is by manifesting the "fruitage of the spirit," which basically means, when you do things that God approves of and you ask for his blessing, he bestows you with his holy spirit. People with holy spirit tend to manifest the "fruitages" of the spirit such as: "love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness and self-control." (Galatians 5:22, 23)

To that end, there are a couple books I could recommend. One is called "Questions Young People Ask - Answers That Work" and the other is "What Does the Bible Really Teach?"

You can find both books by visiting www.watchtower.org or you can email me.

I wish you well and I'm sure you'll overcome whatever your habit is! :)

My buddhist enthusiat yoga teacher says if you replace addictions with another then there was no point to what you've done.

Easy for him to say.

I do it all the time. I quit chocolate and get hooked on diet coke. I quit diet coke I get hooked on buying magazines.

I'm currently hooked on Dr Pepper, so I'm hoping you get some really good quit suggestions here.

I guess we've only been replacing, not giving up. Giving up involves doing nothing rather than doing something.

it sounds like you may benefit from going to see a good therapist. please don't take offense but if habits are that bad for you it may be something wrong up there in the brain. possibly a chemical imbalance. or there may be some things you need to work through with some therapy sessions. usually things of that severity are your brains way of trying to fix other things. it almost seems like a form of OCD you are talking about. which in the presence of a chemical imbalance untreated OCD tendencies can become prevelant. my son has mood disorder and before being diagnosed and medicated they were sure he had OCD which in reality the OCD was his brains way of trying to correct the untreated mood disorder. when you replace one habit with another it generally means there is something else going on. good luck to you.

Smoke Crack cocaine! This will help you give up any other habits that you may have.
You will have to take up shoplifting and prostitution to fund your new habit when it becomes a real habit you cant quit.
