At his age, I would suggest something simple. Probably round in form, such as a snowman, which would be seasonal.

I remember when I was in school we made piggy banks. All you do is get a normal balloon and cover it with vaseline. You then apply several layers of paper mache. You need to build up about 10 layers, allowing each layer to dry in between and leaving the end with the knot free from paper mache. After you've built up the layers and they're completely dry, burst the balloon and remove it from inside. You can now paint your paper mache shape to mae a variety of things. You can make a piggy bank by cutting a slot and attaching the bottoms of some egg cartons to make legs and a snout, and some paper ears. Or you could make a hot air balloon and attach a small tub to the bottom with some string - the possibilities are ENDLESS!!! Have fun! :-)

My brother used to play with the kids all of the time. One of his favorite projects was to blow up a fairly large balloon (you can get these at a balloon shop). He would have the kids help form the paper mache over the balloon. After it dried, he would pop the balloon, and they would make a lamp base out of it. He once used one of them to make a pinata (that was popular with the kids too). The balloon idea makes it easy to end up with a hollw but large project without using a lot of paper mache.

I always remember at school we would cover a balloon in paper mache and make a mask. That always went down well!

We always blow up a balloon, cover it in paper mache, let it set, pop the balloon, cut the paper mache balloon in half, and voila, two masks ready to stick and paint!

Blow up a balloon and cover with papier mache. Let it dry, then pop the balloon. From there you could make anything from heads to piggy banks (use toilet roll tubes for legs, stick on and reinforce with papier mache.

This is gonna take some time though! At my daughter's school they used salt dough to make stuff - it's instant and when it's done you simply pop in the oven on a low heat to dry...

Make a reindeer! Make a rough basic form of one from newspaper. You can make it stronger by making a form from wire coat hangers, (coat hanger wire, pair of pliers, a wire cutter-MUCh easier than it sounds) You then mash newspaper over the wire. On top of that, add the mache. Just keep in mind that this is for fun and memories, and not an art grade! You can keep the silly thing "forever," dragging it out on Christmas.

You can use plates, bowls or ornaments as templates. Vaseline them well before covering with strips of newspaper. When dry slip out the plate or bowl. With ornaments cut round the middle or wherever necessary and slip off the ornament then tape the pieces back together. Cover with a coat of PVA glue for added strength. Use white emulsion for a base coat then paint your colours in acrylic.
