I know buddhist monks get only like 5-6 hours of sleep a night, I'm used to getting 8-9, but I've been thinking what I could do with those extra hours, I just got 5.5 and I'm pretty tired, but will my body start to adjust. I don't think we really need 8 hours of sleep do we?

recent studies show about 5.5-8 hours is good per night on average. under 5 or over 9 can start to affect your health, due to stress and other factors. you also have to realize that you can't "catch up" on sleep. keep a sleep cycle for about a week, then change if you need to. 1 night isn't going to tell you what your body wants to do, it is affected by that days activities.

I think most studies will say you really only need four hours of sleep for your body to fully recooperate. If you don't believe it, ask anyone who has joined the military and gone through basic training. You will not get more than 4 hours of sleep and you will feel refreshed every morning. I think a lot of it has to do with your diet and what type of shape you are in. The better shape you are in physically the faster your body recooperates and recovers. I'm 30 and function fine off of 4.5 hours a night and have been for the last four or five years. I can not sleep 8-9 hours a day. I feel like I'm wasting time and my body will not allow me to sleep that long. Find what works for you but I do believe your body will adjust.

How much sleep you need depend a lot on your age. Teens and young adult need between 8-10 hours nightly in order to function well during the day. Older adults need between 7-9. Elderly people often find they only need between 5-7 hours to feel refreshed. Age, activity level, and most of all, how your body feels, should be your guide.

Buddihist monk spend a lot of time sitting around praying. If you only do that 5-6 hours might be enough for you.

If possible, an adult should try to get around 7 hours per night. Children are more in the range of needing 8.

Although many factors influence how much sleep you really need, most young adults report sleeping about seven and a half hours on weekday nights and eight and a half hours on weekend nights. And the common recommendation is eight hours a night. But individual needs vary greatly. There are so-called short-sleepers and long-sleepers -- those who need as little as five and a half hours to as much as about nine and a half hours.

The amount of sleep you require depends on several factors such as: Genetic, Your sleep hygiene (those daily activities you control, from drinking coffee or alcohol to smoking and exercise), quality of your sleep, Your 24-hour daily cycle known as the circadian rhythm.

it's different for each person, but the key is to get your sleep all in one stretch, because sleep does not have a cumulative effect-just ask any parent of a newborn. If you feel tired after 5.5, try 6 tomorrow & progress from there to see where your threshold is.

it all depends how old you are i think seems like if your older you need less sleep but if your in your teens or early adult you need it. and sometimes you get too much you get lazy i mean over 8 . then your use to sleeping in and its not good better to get up like at 6 to 7 am each day seems to be a good time to regulate your sleep pattern
