Communism is just a more extreme version of socialism.

Socialist countries can have an element of democracy, the US, UK, France, Germany etc have socialist aspects.

For example, welfare, government subsidized healthcare, etc...
but still has capitalistic aspects where individuals own business and land. The people vote on their leaders, ie democracy.

Communism on the other hand, usually involves total central planning, and is frequently controlled by dictators or a small group of people. They decide what companies produce what. They decide everything that will be done in the country. They usually put down internal dissent with violence. Communist countries are like North Korea, China prior to 2000 (still semi communist), the USSR before it collapsed.

In true Marxist theory: socialism is the ownership of property (think productive capital, not consumer goods - the state doesn't own your television, it owns your television factory) by the state, a state sanctioned through democratic consent, but with unequal distribution of goods based on work done. In communism, the state has withered away; the people learned how to hold property (capital) in common without the need for an overarching national, political structure (like a decentralized Jeffersonian democracy) and goods are distributed equitably.

Communism could be too utopian, but there are forms of socialism all over the world today that followed the failure of capitalism in the Great Depression. Socialism, in Marxist theory, is a transitional phase between capitalism and communism. Personally, I don't think we can ever move beyond the socialist phase. Large societies will always need a state. But the rules of distribution can always evolve based on the preferences of the people who have democratic control over that state.

In socialism there is no private sector in economics. All factories, plants, organizations, airlines etc have the only owner - the government. The profits the companies make go to the government (equivalent to tax in the USA) while the workers get their salaries depending on their positions in the company.
The main concept behind all this is that the director of a company cannot get all the profit company make. The director does not get much more money then a worker in the company. The profit the company makes goes to the government and then is shared for free education and medical care and other purposes.....
You can not have your own factory in Socialism. You can build your own house and have your own property though. But you can not make a profit of it for yourself. If you have your own house but you cannot resell it many times to make a profit. You can only sell your house 1 time in two years. If you are in agriculture you can have as much stocks (cows, pigs etc) as its needed to feed your family but cannot make a profit of it that is to sell milk or beef to someone or etc. You can do it of course but in very small quantities. You can sell your beef or milk to the government as much as like though. The main consept of cocialism is that you can not use another people working for you and make profit of their jobs.

Communism suggests that in the long run people would be working for free (no money) but at the same time would be getting besides the free services such as education, medicare and houses, also the food and other products. There was no communism in the world yet. That was a dream that has never come tru.

Communism dictates the people work for the glory and honor of the State (Govm't)! Socialism dictates that your efforts are shared towards the whole of the community, that everyone is treated equally and everything is shared equally, no matter your efforts, time put into the results! History has shown that niether has been successful! When you eliminate the individuals creativity, ideas, free will and not reward them, it results are mediocore at best, quality is nil and the human spirit is wasted! The success of the US in just 230 years proves that recognizing, developing and rewarding individual efforts helps everyone! Including the world! History has shown this by the US's generosity throughout our exsistance! Not one communist or socialist country has ever been so generous as the US in all aspect of humanity and goodwill!

Communism is a political value that tries to enforce the idea of equality through socialism...it has failed because humans are in charge of it.
Socialism is a thought brought about by Marx who tried to make us realize that everyone needed to be considered. If there is one person in pain, then the whole country should be in pain. It was a Utopian idea.
There is a lot of difference between an idea and politics.

Property ownership. In communism no one has private property, as it is outlawed. In socialism, you do have private property, but sacrifice it for fair distribution as determined by the state. Both are evil, but socialism is more evil.

Communism is when you work and get no more than what the govt. will give you (ie. not much). Socialism is when you work, get paid, and then give most of it back to the govt. to support to cradle to grave entitlements.

In socialism, if you own two cows, and your neighbor owns one,
they take one and sell you the milk.

In communism, if you own two cows and your neighbor owns one,
they take one of yours and kill it.
