To begin with.......... losing our stoned tourists would not be the worst thing really.......... and our economy wouldn't die because of closing the coffee shops. Stoneys don't go on wild shopping tours, nor do they visit our main tourist attrections, not do they dine in our finest restaurants.

But, as a Dutch person, I have not heard any such thing as banning the cannabis to foreigners. No way!! As long as it will be tolerated here, it will be for every one older than 18, no matter what nationality.

The European Union is not happy with our soft drugs policy, and there are voices against it. But at the same time, some of the European countries are thinking of copying our policy.

I've seen this question popping up several times at Y.A.
Where did the gossip come from??

There is no way they can ban the tolerated dope in my country, it would cause a revolution! But there is a new policy that enables cities to reduce the number of coffeeshops. Also, the already long existing rules are now more controlled by the police.

For some time, the Dutch government have been under pressure from their neighbours, and the EU to ban smoking and cultivation of cannabis in the Netherlands.
Although there is not set date when this will happen, increasingly evidence of it is amounting. There are a numberof coffeeshops that have adopted a members only policy. But this only extends to actual admittance. You can still but your favorite smoke, but you can't sit down, smoke it, and relax. If you go to the Greenhouse in Tolstraat, or the Border down near Amstelveenseweg this practice has been in effect for over 5 years. The government and police are also cracking down heavily on coffeeshops found with hard drugs on the premises, and closing them down - even if it was a customer who was found with it on their person - as with Brandenzand on Marnixstraat. They have changed the law so that no coffeeshop can advertise the fact that they sell cannabis or anything related. They can't have websites advertising either. The coffeeshops are now relying purely on tourists and word of mouth.
The main places where change of the nature you speak of will be noticable, will be on the borders with Germany and Belguim. The Germans have long been complaining of drugs "runs" across the border, and naturally the Dutch aren't really that interested in helping. But border towns such as Hulst in the south used to be great places to dip over the border from Antwerp, and now you can buy nothing there!

It's looking like it may happen, but not for some time I'm sure, as the Dutch make for too much money out of stoners to get rid of it!

Damn I hope not:( Why would they? People that smoke weed don't die of an overdose like other "drugs" that are out there and technically it's not a "drug" like the government tells us. It's simply just a plant that people smoke to feel high. I think it's just a conspiracy that it's not legal in the U.S because everyone that smokes knows the best buds are grown in other countries. Therefore, the government can't make as much money as they do for alcohol and cigarettes (which kill people every year I might add:( including some close family members of mine)Thus making this plant illegal and a so called "drug." Anyways, let me get outta here b4 the nonsmokers call me a "paranoid pothead" or whatever else they call people who smoke.

That would be bad for tourism, and the Dutch are not stupid. The two main reasons tourists visit Amsterdam are cannabis and prostitution.

Stoneys do stay in expensive hotels, and dine in fine restaurants, and visit musuems, and tulip fields. You just don't see them acting like idiots on the street.

There's about a snowball's chance in hell of that happening; but believe what you like...the Germans have been trying to get the Dutch to cooperate with their stone age drug laws for eons, all to no avail! They will be foreigners eating Space Cakes on New Year's Eve in the middle of Amsterdam for a long time to come...
