I am from a family of 15 children, and I am number 9. When I was in 1st. grade, my Mom & Dad packed all of us in our stationwagon, and we drove somewhere up to Northern California. I remember my Mom saying to my Dad, that we didn't have any money for food, much less Christmas. I remember being really hungry and that "presents" were really not at the top of my list. For what ever reason, we turned around, and drove all the way back home. And when we arrived, I couldn't believe my eyes! There on the porch was three giant boxes, all wrapped up in Christmas wrapping paper! Mom & Dad took the boxes inside the house and unwrapped them. In one box, was all that we needed for a Christmas dinner! In the other two boxes, there were coats for all of us. Then they opened the last box, and it had a present for each of us. Mine was a little Indian doll! I loved that doll, and still have her today. I am now 50 years old, and will never forget whoever did this wonderful thing for my family. Every Christmas, I give out toys and clothes & food to those in need...I know what it is like to "need." I just wish I could help "everyone."

I dontate money and I do stocking stuffers for kids in group homes. I suppose I could help out over Christmas at a homless shelter but usually during the holidays Im visiting with family. If people at least donate a dollar to some good cause during the holiday season thats better than nothing.

Ema, isn't that a great contradiction that in "the land of plenty" (USA) millions of citizens don't have anything to look forward to? How can you wish them a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year? What makes them feel more miserable is that it is such a mercantilized holiday and they just cannot be part of it .
You ask if there are other less fortunate peolple at Christmas. Oh, most certainly! All over this planet there are millions that don't celebrate Christmas and live in total poverty and misery.

My parents will be serving Christmas meals at a homeless shelter in Dallas, and I think I will do the same thing in Atlanta since I won't be able to go home for the holiday this year. My dad also volunteers throughout the year with Habitat for Humanity and does carpentry work for them whenever he can as that is a hobby of his.

Every year we give as many toys as we can to Toys For Tots. One year they helped us out when we had nothing at all....not even dinner for Christmas.
We also donate to the local children's home. My sister and I go out and buy wrapping paper, tape, stockings, and candy. One year, one of the social workers there said she had lots of gifts, but nothing to wrap them in!
My friend and I also pick up strollers, car seats, and cribs from people and clean them (and/or fix) for the battered women's shelter. This goes on all year, but the Christmas Spirit keeps us going!

Wal Mart has the Christmas tree where you can pick names.I pick 5 names each year. Also I try to be a secret santa to someone less fortunate in my neighborhood(check with your local police department they will know of someone who would really appreciate it). Mail the kids a gift card from Toys r us or Wal-mart in a envelope that has from santa on it.

Every year we give a turkey and the fixings to our local food bank. On Thanksgiving day it is our tradition to have and empty seat at the table this way if we hear of someone with no place to go we have room for them at our table...... My grandma always told me to remember this I felt sorry for myself because I had no shoes until I saw a man with no feet
