It is not true to say that countries that have received aid have not brought themselves out of poverty....you cited Korea which did in fact receive aid in the aftermath of the Korean war. Another example is Ireland which received significant amounts of aid in the form of EC Structural Funds and is now one of the richest countries in Europe from having been one of the poorest only 20 years ago. It is how the aid is administered and spent that is important and it would be wrong to cite 'hard work' or lack thereof as a reason for a country's poverty I am sure that the majority of people in the poorest countries in Sub Saharan Africa work very hard-there is just less of a payoff.

Not incorrect, but I would say they get out of poverty also because of RIGHT POLICES, and a bit of luck!
Yes, many people in the 'newly developed countries' particularly those in the far east are tough workers.
However, I would argue the successful economies in Asia are based on a lot of other things as well. For instance, strong vertical family ties helps families businesses to grow; Parents in East Asia also do their best to help their children to stay in school as long as possible. The relatively homogenous ethnicity and culture within national borders, and their secular values (weak religion) also helps avoiding conflicts within countries.

Charlotte C - Bravo- to actually answer teh question instaed of indulging in jingoistic approaches that most would and have done. My salutations to you on that objectivity that you have been able to maintain. Indeed it is the able administration of the aid which is more often not which is the root cause of poverty still being a phenomena world over.

the most unfortunate thing about the countries requiring aid is that most kindly efforts from others are confounded by war, corruption or both.......conquer these two miseries and there is room for a ray of hope

because charity and aid doesn't get through to the people who need it because of the corrupt governments!

sometimes it seems like no matter how much money we send it makes little difference, I know its hard but sometimes charity really doe's begin at home.
