A citizen of the United States. It has nothing to do with political or religious beliefs.

People can live in America without being American. Illegal immigrants are not Americans - and I hate the term illegal immigrant. They're not immigrants - they're invaders.

An American is a legal citizen of the United States of America whether natural (born here) or naturalized (immigrants coming legally). That is the basic definition, but a true American is so much more. The true American cherishes our country's heritage, all the way back to its founding fathers and the high ideals on which this country is founded. A true American feels pride inside when they recite the pledge to the Stars and Stripes flying in the breeze. A true American feels a swelling of the spirit of freedom when they stand with his/her over his/her heart as the Star Spangeld Banner is played. A true American honors the great men of this country including all of the soldiers who have served or fallen in battle for our freedom. A true American cherishes his/her freedom and would never think of burning an American flag or even think of flying another nations flag above the Stars and Stripes. A true American in short shows a high level of patriotism for America and keeps dear the inherent freedoms that are his/hers while practicing an unwavering sense to preserve those same freedoms.
So many "Americans" have forgotten the true meaning of what makes an American.

IMO, someone who loves this country, supports our troops fully, never badmouths the government even when they don't like what's happening, someone who would die to uphold the beliefs and ideals that this country was founded on, someone who believes in duty and honor to America.
If i had it my way, certain rights should be earned by duty or service to the country.
