I love... LOVE to cut hair. I've been cutting hair since I was 10 years old. I'm very comfortable cutting hair and have to admit I'm pretty darn good at it. If my sister goes to a salon she is never satisfied and comes to me to fix it. That happens with others that I know too. I've been doing this all these years for free in my kitchen. (previously in my mama's kitchen :) ) I also give permanents, highlight and dye hair. I use to have a corporate life until a few years ago when I decided to stay home with my children. I've really been thinking about opening up a salon in my home but don't know how to go about it. I'd appreciate answers from anyone, especially those who have started a salon business of their own. I realize I would need a certificate or degree to do it legally (I think). Can anyone please tell me how to go about it? And fill me in on the pros and cons. Also, how much money can be expected to be earned? I live in a small town in Illinois. Thanks!

What is "day release to college"? I've been through full time college. I didn't realize you'd have to go through "full time college" to cut someones hair. Am I wrong?

Does anyone read what people write anymore? Most of these answers are not helping me. I don't want to work for a company.... I want to stay home and have a business. I have a very good education and I simply want to learn about getting a license... not that I need one.

It's great that you have a talent for hairstyling... in just about any area... that is amazing! So, what you have to do to get a license is first go through a certified beauty school and take the courses, there is also a period of time where you do actual work on customers' hair. Once you graduate, then you will have to pass state board exams.. and get a license.... then you can apply for a shop license to open the salon in your home. There are state laws and requirements to do that though so you will have to check with the appropriate office in your area. There are always rules and regulations with these types of things... you also will want to find a good supply store to buy products from, and you will have to be licensed for that as well... buying and selling the product is another thing altogether, and you will have to have a tax number. It's complicated, but once you get it going, it's great!
I did it, but I'm retired now... I have been a hairstylist for over 30 years... good luck.... sounds like you are great... but it does take work and some time to get it going... I hope you will do it!

First of all, call the hair schools near where you live to check their pricing. I was looking into attending hair school last month and did the same and found out a lot of information. For vocational schools in the area the price was never over $1000 for the schooling and supplies while at 'hair' schools the price was never under $5000! Some programs can be finished in 9 months if you are able to attend the schooling the entire day or night....many schools offer both day and night classes. Some are only a couple hours a day/night, or may be all night but do not require you to attend the whole time. In most cases you determine your hours as many schools understand peoples' needs to work full time. Look on the internet too see if your state provides an Occupational Handbook, these have low, median, and high amounts of salaries for multiple occupations in your state. In Oklahoma the median salary for a Hair stylist is only $19,000 according to the OOH but I know people that make much more than that. I would also recommend attending business and finance classes if you do not already have a similar degree so you are prepared to run your own business. A vocational school in your area will offer those as well.

There should be a state college of cosmetology in your area. That is where you need to go. You will fill out an application, then if they decide to give you an interview, you would do the interview and they then will either accept you or not. Then you would buy the kit and find out what you have to pay and when you would want to start. You cant open your own business until you've went thru the course, which in my state is almost a year long, its about 11 months. Full time.

If you are confident enough and skilled enough you can go straight to the licensing board and test. Then you would have to equip your home with all the necessary items. The pros you can work from home, schedule around your life, keep your earnings. Cons your home would be a semi public place with risks such as potential burglars. You would have to go thru health inspections and whatever else your state and county laws require. You are potentially at risk for things such as lice infestations in your home, etc...Your earnings will be according to your client base over head and advertising.

Check your local community college and see if they have a cosmotology (SP) department. The school that I go to here in georgia has one. You may want to see if your community college has a program like that.
