The world wide web on the other hand was "invented by Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau in 1990. In 1989, while working at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research)"

Sometimes I feel so all alone in the world.

According to Microsoft's very own reference resource, BOOKSHELF '96, Al Gore did pretty much invent the internet. We might assume that Microsoft would have a pretty good handle on that particular issue and would know what they're/it's talking about. Here's an excerpt from an article entitled, "The Internet: How did it originate?" (That's "ORIGINATE". Does something "originate" when it is "invented", dammit? So let's put this crap to rest forever. THROW IT AT THE PIGS!)

The army to communicate with other army types across the country & then worldwide. The outside world got a hold of bulletin boards & decided it was a good way to get in contact with people from all over the world. Basic Multi User Domain games began to pop up, as well as basic chat programs. Email became a way of contacting these people & then it sort of went form there into a mainstream way of life.

The internet was originally developed in 1969 when the Department of Defense created the Advanced Research Project Agency Network (ARPANET). The purpose of this network was to link unviersities and reserach centers together so that they could share information. Like most things... it got commercialized and... voila... the internet was born.
