The answer depends on how they are used. Like any communication medium, they can be used for good and bad purposes, "high" and "low" entertainment. Like film, the use can range anywhere from educational (documentaries) to pornographic. The medium of comics itself is not inherently bad, but rather takes on the quality of the purpose it is used for. Comics has great potential that has only partly been realized or utilized. For more on the potantial of comics, read "Understanding Comics" or "Reinventing Comics" by Scott McCloud. Within these books, he references several comic authors who have stretched the boundaries of comics.

Comic strips or Comic books?

Either way I say yes these can actually be used for varying degrees of philosophy everything from Existentialism to Morality to Image and Perception even Metaphysics. Despite the idea that these depict violence, and are "distracting"

If it weren't for comic books many young men would never have read at all in school as sad as that sounds. But, the truth is if you stop and see some of te brilliant conflicts with in characters Internal and External it seems apparent to me that yes comic books are good for us.

Absolutely

Not all comics play it up for just laughs. There was a comic book called "Maus" that told the story of the Nazi Holocaust *if Hitler was a cat and the Jewish people were mice*. Def nothing funny there, but it really drove the message home. So yes, comics can be beneficial as long as it portrays positive messages

Well, It encourages reading.
I don't think it should be a substitute, but eh, it's like having recess in school. You do the schoolwork, then you go play!

Adults create comics. Adults read comics. But then again, they say, "Oh, you can't read it, it rots your brain!"
>_>;;; Riiight.

Of course, depending on the content, if kids read it, then I think they should be supervised. Manga is popular in bookstores (Manga is another word for comic), but not all are reader friendly. Review, then decide.
My little godbrother is 6, and his parents subscribe to the classic marvel comics, like Spiderman. He can't read yet, but he loves the pictures.

Adults however, have a brain and should have common sense not to be corrupted. >_>; But some don't...ugh...which kinda makes it as a negative influence.

They had a History Channel special on Comic books. I suggest you watch it and repel against ignorance!

Of course!~ It saves you when you are bored! And it helps you develop your imagination~ Sometimes it helps for you to become more artistic, and it makes your spelling and grammar better! It's just like a book only with more pictures than words, so comics are OK!~\(^0^)/

To some extent, yes. As long as you don't mind the graphic violence, and get into the most gripping storylines.
