I go with "the thought" for people I care about LOL!
For people like my SIL, I just go to Big Lots and find the cheapest piece of junk I can find hehe! ;) At least she gets something - two years in a row she's failed to get anything for her brother (my husband) or her two nieces.
For those I care about, it's the thought - and sometimes that means extra money. My hubby really wants this amplifier but it's quite expensive. So he won't buy it - but I'm getting it for him for Christmas.
One year I made homemade soap baskets for all the women in the family. Each one got a basket of soaps in their favorite colors and scents, along with half-bottles of a nice wine. I got calls for months from them saying, "I just had a nice bath last night with the wine!" We were pretty broke that year, and each basket cost about $10 to make. But they all loved it. Invariably, they'd have a tough day, come home, see the basket and decide to take a hot bath with some wine! It was great. When my kids are a bit older and I have more time, I'll probably do something like that again.

I think you should buy what you feel you want to, either expensive or cheap, it doesn't matter, it's the thought that counts.
I would be happy just getting a card and a bar of soap, it's the thought that goes into buying the gift, not the cost.

It's the thought that counts does not make me happy at all. Their is always something cute, nice that does not costs loads, i saw lovely gift-sets and Superdrug for under 5 pounds. If you don't have money bake some biscuits pack it nicely into little jam jars decorate and that would make me happy as well. The fact that you did it specially for them will make them feel special. It's the thought that counts is just some mean person's way of saying i did not give a damn.:)))

I would only feel guilty if I get something expensive but not really useful to me. So for me, it is definitely thought that counts gifts.

If you start early enough you can pick a gift from the heart better, small things with great thought is better than big thing with only no thought.

Christmas is a time to remember and celebrate the birth of Christ our lord. His gifts were gold frankincense and myrrh and a poor shephard gave a lamb.
It is the thought that counts not the pound signs.

Its the thought!
Some people think they need to spend X amount on someone other wise they wont think they care.
Thats rubbish. Its the act of giving the gift rather than how much it costs.
