Actually Hillary is a controversial figure who has both been praised and condemned. When she was First Lady her plan for national health insurance failed in the United States, but was adopted as a model by at least one other country (Source One).

Hillary routinely has high negatives among American politicians, yet she was recently reelected as Senator in New York (Source Two), so she is at least popular enough to win in one of the largest of states.

The truth is that Hillary Clinton is a Rorschach test of the public image of today's American woman. This may be a generational change. Bob Dole's Wife, Elizabeth Hanford Dole is herself a Senator from North Carolina. She was also a Cabinet Secretary under both Presidents Reagan and George H. W. Bush (Source Three). She is considered one of the most powerful women in Washington, but she has not antagonized people the way that Hillary has. A major reason for this is that she appears initially soft-spoken even "feminine." She quietly pursued her ambitions in Republican politics, while not publicly complaining about the lack of opportunities for women. Yet, when she ran for her Senate Seat, it is widely known, that she used many of the tactics Hillary employed to win hers. But she is careful to smile often and not upstage the men she shares power with (including her husband, former Senate Majority leader, Robert Dole).
