My husband, a teacher, uses a computer everyday in school (that is when the blasted thing is working!). There are several reasons he uses a computer:
Every teacher in his school has a school e-mail address so that parents can reach them easier and the administration can send out mass memos (as a bonus, he also gets to keep in touch once or twice a day with us here at home).
My husband uses a site where students can turn in papers that he has assigned. The site is a wonder! Every paper that goes through the site is examined for spelling mistakes and for plagarism. At a glance my husband can see who has done their work, who hasn't and who is taking credit for someone else's work.
My husband also makes up tests using the computer. He has a database of every test that he's ever given. He can choose to take questions from older tests that cover the same material or he can make up new tests entirely, inputting questions relevent to the current lesson. There's a program he uses that will take the questions and put them in random order, so that while every student is taking the same test, the tests are not all in the same order. This makes cheating a bit more difficult.
He also has to turn in his lesson plans for the week before the week starts. He has to use the computer to write up his lesson plans.
This year the (blasted!) school administration has decreed from on high that the students grades have to be put on-line every week so that they can be available for parents to view. (Making more work for the teachers... trust me they have more than enough to do as it is!)
Yes, he could teach without the computer. The computer is just an important tool in his teaching day!

As a teacher, I use a computer pretty much constantly. I use word processing to make up worksheets and tests, as well as composing. I also sometimes use PowerPoint to present notes. I do a lot of research on the internet, and I have students use the internet for class projects. My school has a recordkeeping program that I use to keep track of grades and to send attendance to the office each period. I use e-mail to communicate with parents and sometimes with students as well as to send messages to and from the office. I am also responsible for maintaing our school website, so I have special software on my computer for that purpose. Finally, I see keeping up with technology as a necessity for today's teachers. It is important that we understand the technology that our students are using.

attendance, grading, email to other teachers and parents, checking grades of students in other classes and compiling data from state standards to put on the district website. Forming committees and taking on-line classes. Researching and finding video-stream media to show the class. Ordering books and materials and creating our own power point presentations or downloading/ creating worksheets.
