Contrary to popular belief a bathroom fan is actually there to control humidity, and secondarily smells... So installation close to the ceiling is the best place, however in the wall or ceiling is up to you. Cheers!

Put it on the ceiling it will exhaust the humidity a lot better and who wants to hear that loud bath fan right in their ear when they are sitting on the toilet?

Is it an exhaust fan? If so, I would put in in the ceiling. Steam rises and the ceiling would be most effective.

i recommend a remote fan like 'Fantech'
you can add a 'Y' and install one in the shower to prevent the moisture from getting out into the bathroom and the other can go into the wall behind the toilet
I know I've installed many of these products. i like them most of all because they make no noise and that they seal air tight to stop the heat from escaping the house
i recommend a timer so you don't forget that it is running

Put it in the ceiling. But you must vent it all the way out to the outside. You should not vent into the attic.
