There is no age limit. Lots of parents teach their children responsibility by making "lawn mowing" a chore but their opinions differ when it comes to the age. As you can see by some answers, some were far too young by my opinion but maybe they understood how serious it was while others don't.

If a riding mower is the only equipment you have in mowing the lawn (My father has a rotary lawnmower where you have to pull a bar down before you start and if you release the bar, the mower stops! A helpful safety feature to prevent further injuries), I would wait until your child is older, preferably 12. I know some children tend to be BIG for their size and could reach the pedals but I wouldn't let a child get on until I was absolutely sure that they understood how dangerous it can be if they're horsing around. It all depends on their maturity level as well. I have a nephew who is now 16 and I wouldn't even trust him to get on mine because of how foolish he can get.

Take your time to teach them the rules such as:
Look behind you before you back up in reverse in case children or adults have just started walking behind you when you were passing by.
If there are pets who are not afraid of the mower and tend to come too close, lock them up in the house or garage until you are done.
Etc etc etc...

I would also supervise the child. It's usually easy if you're also in the yard to weed garden beds, pruning plants that need it, etc. And perhaps you may trust them to mow the lawn in due time without needing you around.

no age limit on private land if its for domestic use.

However kids do not have the reactions to be able to do stuff if things start to go wrong, below about 15 years old thier judgement is not enough to see all the cause and effect.

They look fine, and you get the impression all is well, but if an accident is looming then they do daft things.

Its the same situation as driving a car on private land. Sure they look and feel safe, but if someone suddenly jumps out, or if the accelerator sticks down, would they really have the sense to turn off the ignition ? Or would they panic and turn into a "rabbit in the headlights"

old enough to reach the pedals and steer the machine withour falling over.
I began using a riding mower when I was around 8 years old, but my cousins started when they were but 6.

We were driving farm tractors at age 12 and pulling a bush hog over the pastures.

Old enough to know that if you get it wrong, it could be a bloodbath of dismemberment and severed limbs, screams of agony etc.

Only an a r s e hole would allow a child to operate such a thing. But I guess if you were in the agricultural industry, 14 or so would be OK. I very much doubt if there's a minimum age but your conscience should decide.

No age limit, since private property is just that...private, and no drivers license is needed for a lawn mower then any age can drive one. By the way, my son started driving it when he was 3 (the blade was off of course).

I do not know of any age minimums, just as long as a younger person understands how, and can physically handle using the mower.

I don't think there is an age limit. It involves more of training and responsiblilty. Some adults should not be on riding mowers.

any age the law doesn't apply because it isn't a public road its private the only thing you need to do is make sure the child can handle it and get all the controls properly so take them around your land the first couple of times on your lap then let theem enjoy.
